After the Scot Centre, another used book store curved into the Great Newport St. I know all this because I wrote down the names of these stores in my tiny pad. BAR EPERNAY, The Mailbox I’VE visited Bar Epernay quite a few times in the past – and always left feeling slightly disgruntled.
Like a Sandra Bullock movie, it promised so much, yet ultimately gave so little.
I loved the wow-factor of the fireplace in the centre of the room, and the grand piano in the corner.
But after sitting a while, I would never fail to notice that everything else looked slightly slumped and saggy.
Just like a once foxy lady who has dropped a few sprogs since her glory days and now tends to forget about make-up, the hairbrush and the ironing board.
Though she has started to think long and hard about Kit-Kats, Penguins and Blue Ribands.
That was Bar Epernay, alright. But I don’t think the restaurant and bar in the Mailbox will be needing to dip into its secret stash of Kit-Kats anymore.
Bar Epernay has had a make-over.
The fireplace is still there and the piano remains.
But everything else has been polished and perfected. Shabby neglect has been replaced by shimmer, shine and champagne.
I wouldn’t say the changes are dramatic.
It’s just that Bar Epernay has been brought up to the general spit-spot standards you would expect from any other watering hole in the Mailbox.
There are a few major changes, though. The champagne library, for instance, which stocks an extensive range of bubbly. Though I don’t know why it’s called a ‘library’.
I tried obtaining a bottle of Cristal by flashing my library ticket, but I got the impression that my waiter would have much preferred hard cash.
Talking of my waiter, I have to say he was friendly, super-efficient and well informed about the treats on the menu.
Later, he told me he was from Argentina.
Which probably explains his efficiency and friendliness. Clearly not trained in the British crafts of sloth and surliness.
There’s a new menu in Bar Epernay, too, which includes plenty of swanky dishes.
Riki’s friend, Dudi, was in town.
For a starter, he chose chicken liver parfait with caramelised onion marmalade and brioche (pounds 5.95).
The parfait was so smooth it could have been a moustache-twirling bounder in a 1950s British B-movie.
The marmalade gave the dish the added kick it needed. Dudi was impressed.
As was Riki with her main course, chicken with sweet potato, spinach and a lemon and honey dressing (pounds 13.95).
She said the dish tasted ‘amazing’, and it certainly looked the part.
